Stormy Weather – Times Radio – New 5 Part Series

Transport historian and broadcaster Tim Dunn has a passion for ships.

He might be best known for his love of trains, presenting programmes like The Architecture the Railways Built and Secrets of the Underground, but over the summer he’s been working with us on Stormy Weather, a new 5-part radio series for Times Radio celebrating the country’s proud heritage of day excursion cruising.

Stormy Weather – Times Radio – New 5 Part Series

Tim Dunn presents this new weekly 5-part series from Friday Oct 21st.

The series goes out on Times Radio as part of its Michael Portillo Show – Friday’s from 7pm.

Featuring five of Britain’s most iconic passenger ships: PS Waverley, PS Kingswear Castle, PS Medway Queen, MV Balmoral, TS Queen Mary.

All five ships are part of the UK’s treasured National Historic Fleet.

Tim explains;

“I jumped at the chance to do this series. These ships and services were often extensions of the railways – so it’s only natural that I would be drawn to the project.

“It’s been an inspiring experience talking to the dedicated enthusiasts that have been so important in ensuring these wonderful vessels have survived to be enjoyed by so many today. Whether they are employees, or volunteers, the love for these ships shines through every time.”

Producer Kay Hutchison adds;

“I grew up on the Clyde in a nautical family and knew from the outset that there were inspiring stories to tell – but the more we researched these ships the more we discovered. People really feel connected to the ships – they are part of our national story. I approached Tim about my idea and from our first conversation it was clear he was also passionate about the subject. With our knowledge, and Tim’s enthusiasm and skill, I knew it could make a great series. We were delighted that Times Radio wanted it for their Michael Portilllo show.”

On Times Radio the series (5 x 15 mins) will be part of the Michael Portillo Friday Night Show – Fridays from 7pm.

Stormy Weather is also broadcast on 15 Community and Coastal FM stations across the country and in Scotland the series will also be available in Gaelic, narrated by Gillebride Mac ‘IlleMhaoil.

The series is inspired by social history and transport best-selling title: Hurricane Hutch’s Top 10 Ships of the Clyde By Capt Robin L Hutchison ISBN 9780992746209 RRP £25.
